The "ichthus" (Greek for "fish") is one of the earliest and most important Christian symbols for Jesus.

Believers clearly and succinctly proclaimed their faith in Him as "Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God, our Savior". Taking the first letter of each of these words in Greek you spell the word "Ichthus" - "fish".

Christians began using the symbol of the fish as a visual statement of who Jesus is and why they would dare to worship him in the midst of persecution in the Roman empire. The "ichthus" brought the early Christians back to the heart of their faith in Jesus:

- He is Jesus: truly man, one of us, born of the Virgin Mary, with a name given by God himself (See Matthew 1:21)
- He is the Christ: the Messiah, the Anointed One, promised by the prophets)
- He is the Son of God: not just man, but truly divine, the only way to the Father
- He is our Savior: by offering His life in sacrifice for us on the Cross he has saved us from our sins and won for us mercy and new life.

The ichthus tile medallion is being installed in the center of the floor of our new narthex as way of proclaiming our faith in Jesus and reminding us, each time we enter the church, who He is and why we worship Him.
